Itinerary

This morning your Tour Escort will meet you when the SeaLink coach picks you up at either your designated city hotel or at the Adelaide Central Bus Station. We travel via the beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula to Cape Jervis where we board the SeaLink Ferry to Penneshaw, Kangaroo Island. Highlights today include:

  • viewing Frenchman’s Rock
  • a visit to the historic Maritime & Folk Museum before enjoying lunch at ‘The Penny’ the Penneshaw Hotel, with wonderful views overlooking the ocean.

After lunch we continue onto Cape Willoughby, site of the first lighthouse built in 1852, for a tour of the Lighthouse and Weather Station. Late in the afternoon we arrive at the Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge situated in the idyllic setting of American River, to settle into our accommodation for the next 5 nights. Enjoy dinner this evening with your fellow travellers.

Overnight: Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge, 5 nights

After breakfast, we visit the family-run Oyster Farm Shop in American River, before we head north to visit the Old Wisanger School, officially opened in 1885 which provided continuous schooling until the opening of Kingscote Area School in 1945. We continue along the north coast road to discover the charming swimming beach and surrounding beauty of Stokes Bay. Here we visit the ‘secret beach’ which is protected from the pounding surf by a giant pool surrounded by rocks, and enjoy a delicious lunch at the Rockpool Cafe.

After lunch we visit the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park, home to over 150 species of Native Australian wildlife and over 600 animals, before returning to our hotel and enjoying dinner with our group.

This morning after breakfast, we travel to the western end of the island, Flinders Chase National Park. Travel through the natural rugged beauty of the park to spectacular Remarkable Rocks before heading to Cape du Couedic Lighthouse, built in 1906 and then visit the natural land bridge that is Admirals Arch where we will see Long-nosed Fur Seals.

Then we drive via Point Ellen and Vivonne Bay to witness spectacular views of the Southern Ocean before our lunch stop at Vivonne Bay Lodge Bistro. Finish the day with a visit to the famous Seal Bay where we join our guide for a walk through a wild seal colony that is home to around 600 rare Australian sea lions. We then return to our hotel for dinner.

This morning we have a special visit to see the Rebuild the Independence project on the American River Wharf. A volunteer will explain the historical significance of this vessel and you can see the work they are doing. There is time to grab a morning drink (own expense) before we experience an amazing, interactive, educational, and highly entertaining Birds of Prey free flight presentation at Raptor Domain.

Our BBQ lunch today will be enjoyed at the Emu Ridge Café before we tour the Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery where they manufacture 100% pure Australian Eucalyptus Oil. There will be time to browse their extensive range of eucalyptus products and gifts.

To complete the day, we visit the picturesque Bay of Shoals Winery, to taste some of their quality wines and admire the distant vistas of the North Cape. There is also a short tour of Kingscote, the main township and some free time for a walk on the foreshore or browse in the shops and galleries.

This morning after breakfast there is an opportunity for some pelican feeding across from the hotel, before we travel to Clifford’s Honey Farm, home to the only pure strain of Ligurian Bee in the world where we learn about the interesting life and work of these rare honeybees. Our delicious lunch today is at the Emu Bay Lavender Farm. There will be time to learn about the many ways in which lavender has been introduced into a variety of products (including their ice-cream) which are made on site and on display in their shop.
